Queer chamber music for the people!!! Announcing Contrary Motion 2026: June 17 & 18 at 7pm at the Columbus Mennonite Church. Contrary Motion is a celebration of experimental chamber music by queer composers in honor of Pride Month. We play the oft overlooked music of queer ancestors in conversation with premieres of groundbreaking new works by living composers. We are excited to showcase world premieres of three new works!
- Celadon by Yaz Lancaster
- Color Theory by Zachery Meier
- Queer Percussion Study #1: After Susan Stryker by Noah Demland
Lou Harrison’s monumental Rhymes With Silver (1997) will ground the concert as a queer historical backdrop.
The show features brilliant musicians investing deeply in the new music and educational fabric here in Columbus:
- Devin Copfer, violin
- Daniel Jacobs, viola
- Tim Ledger, piano
- Noah Demland, percussion, composer, and artistic director
- Sam Johnson, cello and artistic director
The poster art was made for Contrary Motion by Bene Scheuer. Bene is a textile artist in Columbus whose silk work and sacred whimsical style will be featured onstage at the show.
This concert is generously supported by the Johnstone Fund for New Music. We are deeply grateful for Jack and Zoe Johnstone’s support helping us invest in Ohio musicians and composers to create a truly unique and authentic celebration of queer lives and art. See you there!
