Are you ready to elevate your kayaking skills and master the art of surfing and playboating? Join Outdoor New England for an unforgettable adventure on one of New England's premier playboating rivers – the Contoocook, affectionately known as the Took, located in Henniker, NH. Each spring, the Took comes alive with snowmelt and rain, creating the perfect playground for kayak surfing and freestyle practice. This trip is designed for intermediate kayakers eager to learn and refine basic freestyle moves, including surfing, squirting, and spinning downriver. We’ll kick off the day with a review of flatwater fundamentals before progressing to surfing techniques on waves and holes. You'll learn to harness natural river features for moves like stern squirts and cartwheels and gain a deeper appreciation for river exploration. After our first lap, we’ll break for a riverside lunch and then dive back in for a second run, focusing on skill progression with personalized coaching.Prerequisites:
A consistent flat water roll
Experience on Class II/III whitewater
Ability to catch eddies and ferry
Access to a playboat (half-slice, full-slice, or playboat)
Need a boat? Outdoor New England offers modern playboats for demo use.
