About this Event

Talk by Conservator Alison Draper

Join us for an exclusive insight into the care and preservation of historic arms and armour from Splendours of the Sikh Raj. Conservator Alison Draper shares behind‑the‑scenes expertise on conserving these remarkable objects, revealing how craftsmanship, materials, and history are protected for future generations.

For over 300 years, the Sikhs have been renowned for their strong sense of justice, bravery, and martial skills. This exhibition showcases exquisitely crafted historic arms and armour, telling powerful stories of faith and identity within the rich multicultural melting pot of the Sikh kingdoms.

This talk offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of the objects on display, including a striking Rajput shield, Northern India, circa 1845, and to explore the challenges and discoveries involved in conserving weapons made for both ceremony and combat.

forms part of Taking Stock, a project that has reviewed and re‑researched under‑used collections in collaboration with local residents and communities, giving these objects renewed relevance and meaning today.

We are grateful to Amarjit Singh and Gurtek Singh for their expertise in supporting the development of this exhibition, and to the wider Sikh community in Manchester for their generosity and support of the accompanying events programme.
