What Lies Beneath: Treating the Young Adult

Working with the young adult with addictive disorders most often also means working with co-occurring disorders of anxiety and depression. This presentation will focus on the dynamics of underlying trauma that fuels these disorders. Recognizing not just blatant traumas but addressing developmental trauma is significant in their treatment. Claudia will conclude by addressing treatment protocol that recognizes the development needs of this age group.

Objectives — Participants will be able to:

• Identify five critical experiences that fuel the mental health and addiction problems of young people

• Describe the relationship of abandonment to development of unhealthy shame

• Identify factors that place young people with economic and social advantages to be high risk for addiction and co-occurring disorders

• List seven core elements to a healthy treatment process
