On June 22nd of 1956, Sonny Rollins entered Rudy Van Gelder Studios in Hackensack, New Jersey and in a single day recorded ‘Saxophone Colossus.’ After recently recording with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk and touring America with the Brown-Roach Incorporated Quintet throughout the early '50s, Sonny would go on to record his sixth studio album as a bandleader. What Rollins referred to as “just another record date,” ‘Saxophone Colossus’ is now regarded a the seminal album of Rollins' career.
