Confident Color, Intentional Design: A Gourd Art Retreat at Codorus State Park
Advertisement
These two complementary workshops invite artists to build both skill and intuition in their gourd work. Color with Confidence: Gourd Coloring Techniques focuses on developing a strong
technical foundation, giving participants the tools and assurance to work with color intentionally. Rooted in Nature: Design-Driven Gourd Art shifts the focus to inspiration and observation, using immersion in the natural world to guide thoughtful design choices. Together, these workshops offer a balanced experience—combining technique and mindfulness—empowering participants
to create gourd art that is both confidently executed and deeply inspired.
Friday Workshop Description: Color with Confidence: Gourd Coloring Techniques
Discover the many ways color can transform a gourd in this one-day, hands-on workshop focused entirely on coloring techniques. Participants will be guided through a variety of coloring processes using different coloring agents, learning how each method interacts with the natural surface of the gourd to create rich, layered results. Through demonstrations and guided practice, you’ll explore techniques that can be applied to a wide range of gourd forms—including ornaments, bowls, vases, and more. A practice gourd will be provided so participants can experiment freely and gain confidence with each method before
moving on to additional projects.
Additional gourds will be available for purchase on site for extended project time, and participants are also welcome to bring their own prepared gourds to work on during the
workshop. This workshop is suitable for all experience levels and is ideal for anyone looking to expand their creative toolbox and develop a deeper understanding of color on gourds. Leave with new skills, inspiration, and pieces that reflect your own unique style.
Saturday Workshop Description: Rooted in Nature: Design-Driven Gourd Art
This immersive, one-day workshop invites participants to step outside the classroom and into nature as a source of inspiration for thoughtful, design-driven gourd art. By engaging with the
shapes, sounds, textures, and colors found outdoors, participants will explore how mindful observation can lead to stronger, more intentional creative decisions.
The day will begin with a short, gentle hike where participants are encouraged to gather found natural objects—such as leaves, bark, stones, seed pods, or feathers—or take photographs that capture patterns, textures, and color relationships. Time spent immersed in nature allows participants to slow down, enter a meditative state, and observe more deeply—often leading to clearer design direction and more cohesive final pieces.
Back in the classroom, participants will select from a variety of gourds in different shapes and sizes, allowing the natural form of the gourd to further influence their design choices. Guided instruction will focus on translating natural inspiration into intentional surface design, encouraging artists to trust both the process and their instincts.
This workshop is suitable for all experience levels and is ideal for artists seeking a deeper connection between nature and their creative work. Participants will leave with a completed or in-progress piece, a renewed sense of creative awareness, and practical strategies for using nature as an ongoing design resource.
Accessibility Notes
● The outdoor portion includes a short, slow-paced hike on generally even terrain.
● Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather.
● Those who prefer not to hike may choose to remain in the classroom and work from provided natural objects or photographs.
● Found objects may be gathered where appropriate; photography is encouraged as an alternative.
● Restroom access and seating will be available before and after the outdoor portion.
Environmental Ethics Note:
Participants are encouraged to gather inspiration mindfully. Found objects should be collected only where permitted and in small quantities, and living plants or sensitive habitats should not
be disturbed. Photography is always a welcome alternative. This workshop embraces a leave-no-trace approach, honoring nature as both teacher and collaborator.
