Leader, soldier, husband, father - Major-General Oliver Nugent is best known for his command of the 36th (Ulster) Division during the First World War and particularly at the Battle of the Somme.During World War 1 men were cut down in their thousands while widows were left to look after the children back home. Cavan, with the rest of Ulster, paid a terrible price. Farrenconnell in Mountnugent, Co Cavan was Nugentās refuge from the horrors of trench warfare.
2026 marks the centenary of the death of General Oliver Nugent. To commemorate this and the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the Nugent 100 committee along with Cavan County Museum have organised a high-level panel of speakers who will discuss Nugent and The Somme as well as Cavan in World War 1 and how the war affected women in Ireland.
