Phillip Brisson, Director of Music and Organist, Cathedral of the Assumption, Louisville, Kentucky performs Marcel Dupré’s iconic Stations of the Cross, a fitting musical meditation for the holy season of Lent. St. Bernard Churchhttps://smamusic.org/concertsonthecasavant/brisson/
Follow Our Lord’s journey to the cross through Marcel Dupré’s powerful “Stations of the Cross” performed by Dr. Philip Brisson, Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral of the Assumption, Louisville, Kentucky, the third oldest Catholic Cathedral in the country. Dr. Brisson is celebrated for both his technical prowess and nuanced interpretation, as well as his tireless promotion of organ performance and choral literature.
The work to be performed premiered in 1932 when Dupré (1886-1971) himself performed a series of 14 improvisations to complement a live narration of poet Paul Claudel’s “Le Chemin de la Croix” in an early multimedia presentation. Here, Dr. Brisson takes Dupré’s challenging composition and combines it with an English translation of Claudel’s poetry. Dupré’s technically difficult style developed while he studied with such organ luminaries as Alexandre Guilmant, Louis Vierne, and Charles-Marie Widor. Through it, we become more appreciative of the sufferings of Jesus on the road to Calvary.
We invite you to partake in this extraordinarily moving and fitting observance of the Lenten season by joining us in the softly lit confines of our beautiful church. Admission to this exceptional concert is free and open to all; free-will offerings are always most gratefully received.
