Performance artist Lou Barnell returns to Full of Noises with an icy immersive sonic experience.

We are all exposed

And must imagine how we are to live

With lands yet remembered.

Six months after her last concert here at Full of Noises, Lou Barnell presents SONG SHELTER / BONE BALLAD - inviting audiences into a shapeshifting shelter. A space where stories form and reform.

Ice is melting, and water seeps. Everything is unstable.

By using breakthrough touch and movement sensor technology embedded in ice sculptures, audiences will be invited to create and move their stories around the space or simply immerse themselves in a live soundscape created with voice, movement, and electronics.

The stories we tell are the worlds we create.

What does it mean to be exposed in the age of the story of destruction? How can our imagination shelter us, and allow us to tell stories that enable survival and positive futures? There is room enough in our vast container of creatures, lands, seas and material to tell a broader, better story about our world.

What worlds can we choose to tell? One that has only winners or losers? One that is capacious, and complex, entangling matter and magic.

Lou Barnell

Lou’s work explores Science Fiction and Dreaming to tell expansive stories and imagine futures in volatile times. I create immersive worlds that I call ‘Live Dreams’.

These expand our perception of sound and listening using constellations of wearable cyborg technologies, voice, body, sculpture and sensory experiences.

These morphic spaces are a squishy, visceral approach to music performance with shapeshifting eco-materials that melt and reform, alongside infectious, exhilarating soundscapes.

Lou Barnell is an Oram Award Winner - a prestigious accolade bestowed on women who are innovators in the fields of music, sound and related technologies.
