Mélat tells stories of love in all its facets – whether romantic or platonic, beginning or ending – because love is, in her eyes, the only truth. Born and raised in the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin, Texas, Melat is no stranger to recognition and representing her community. Whether headlining shows across the nation or opening for the likes of The Internet, Thundercat, PJ Morton, Kool & The Gang, and many more, Mélat’s vocal prowess is celebrated in many of the top publications worldwide. Her work has been covered on Billboard, The Wall Street Journal, Edition Magazine, The Guardian, Essence, Vibe, Tribeza, Austin Woman, and numerous others. Her voice powers up the sports world, from singing the National Anthem for the Austin FC MLS season opening game three seasons and counting to teaming up with Austin's Minister of Culture, Matthew McConaughey in his “Bless The Mood” University of Texas anthem which is played routinely in Austin’s new Moody Center. Melat is no stranger to rocking the stages of the most iconic festivals of her home town, gracing the stages of ACL Festival, SXSW, and Blues on The Green. Most recently she was voted Best R&B by the Austin Music Awards 2024 and nominated for the Austin Under 40 awards for Arts, Entertainment and Social Media. Mélat’s radiance is evident the moment she hits any stage.
Mélat has twice been selected as the musical guest for the UNHCR World Refugee Day Celebration at the illustrious Kennedy Center in DC and represented the USA with a musical performance at the British Science Museum in London. As a first-generation Ethiopian-American, immigration is an important issue to Mélat. She continues her work in this space by serving the local immigrant community as a member of the Leadership Council at American Gateways.
From love to hardship, success to failure, Mélat speaks to what it means to be a human being simply longing to “be.”
