Beyond Baroque and Todos Santos Writers Workshop presents Con Garro y Sin Paz. Author Marcela Magdaleno Deschamps—a writer, playwright, poet, and chronicler—deeply engaged with the life and legacy of Helena Paz Garro and her renowned parents, Elena Garro and Octavio Paz. The author will read from her novel accompanied with photographs and letters chronicling the memories of Paz Garro during her final days at her home in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
She will be joined in conversation by Dr. Maricela Becerra García (Professor at CSU Channel Islands), a scholar of Mexican cultural movements, state violence, and the (post)memories of Mexico ’68. Together, they will explore images, documents, and archival materials that illuminate the intertwined literary, political, and personal histories of the Garro–Paz family throughout the twentieth century.
The evening will conclude with a book signing. This program is open to bilingual audiences and those drawn to twentieth-century Mexican literature.

Beyond Baroque y Todos Santos Writers Workshop presentan Con Garro y Sin Paz, una noche con la autora Marcela Magdaleno Deschamps—escritora, dramaturga, poeta y cronista—cuya obra está profundamente ligada a la vida y el legado de Helena Paz Garro y de sus célebres padres, Elena Garro y Octavio Paz. Magdaleno leerá fragmentos de su novela, acompañada de fotografías, cartas y otros materiales que iluminan los últimos años de Helena Paz Garro en su hogar de Cuernavaca, México.
La autora estará en conversación con la Dra. Maricela Becerra García (profesora en CSU Channel Islands), especialista en movimientos culturales mexicanos, violencia de Estado y las (pos)memorias del México del 68. Juntas, explorarán imágenes, documentos y archivos que revelan las historias literarias, políticas y personales de la familia Garro–Paz a lo largo del siglo **.
El evento concluirá con una firma de libros. Este evento es ideal para públicos bilingües y para quienes se sienten atraídos por la literatura mexicana del siglo **.

About the authors
Marcela Magdaleno Deschamps (Mexico City, 1968) is a Mexican writer, playwright, poet, journalist, editor, singer, humanist, cultural organizer, and environmental advocate. Her work spans multiple genres—poetry, narrative, essays, theater, children’s literature, chronicles, and journalism. She studies the work of Mauricio Magdaleno and Juan Bustillo Oro, essential figures of Mexico’s Golden Age of cinema, with whom she maintains an intergenerational dialogue through her writing. Her work has addressed the 1968 Mexican student movement in both poetry and fiction.
She currently lives in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, where she teaches oral history workshops and supports processes of collective memory. She is a member of the collective Sudcalifornianas and directs the Mauricio Magdaleno Cultural Association. Her publications include Sutil convulsión (Conaculta, 2004), María León, la hierbera del pueblo de Todos Santos (GODESCA Editorial, 2024), La furia y la paz (Premio Mujeres de Morelos, 2018), Leyendas de Metepec (PACMyC Award), Despierta los minutos (Literatelia, 2019), Amazonas de luz (Editorial Lagares, 2014), Escribe tu vida y oxigena emociones (Lectórum/Quarzo, 2023), Una empresa llamada Garro (Nos y Otros Editores, Madrid), Con Garro y sin Paz, among many others. Her poetry has been widely anthologized.
Marcela Magdaleno is an author of free thought and critical vision, committed to the word as a tool for resistance, healing, and community building.
Dr. Maricela Becerra García is a professor at California State University, Channel Islands. She holds a PhD in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She teaches courses on contemporary Latin American cultural production, with an emphasis on memory, feminisms, and resistance. Her current research centers on the interdisciplinary analysis of state violence, trauma, and memory in Mexico.
Her monograph in progress, “2 de octubre, no se olvida”: (Post)Memories of Mexico ‘68, examines contemporary representations of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre from the perspective of the postmemory generation. Her current project explores the role of social media in the feminist movement in Mexico, particularly the use of hashtags to denounce femicides and digital memory as a form of resistance.

Marcela Magdaleno Deschamps (Ciudad de México, 1968) es escritora, dramaturga, poeta, periodista, editora, cantante, humanista, gestora cultural y ambientalista mexicana. Su obra abarca diversos géneros —poesía, narrativa, ensayo, teatro, literatura infantil, crónica y periodismo. Es estudiosa de la obra de Mauricio Magdaleno y de Juan Bustillo Oro, figuras esenciales del cine de oro mexicano, con quienes mantiene un diálogo intergeneracional en su escritura. Ha tocado el tema del movimiento del 68 en México dentro de la poesía y la novela. En la actualidad radica en Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, donde imparte talleres de historia oral y acompaña procesos de memoria colectiva. Es parte del colectivo Sudcalifornianas y dirige la Asociación Cultural Mauricio Magdaleno. Entre sus publicaciones destacan: Sutil convulsión (Conaculta, 2004), María León, la hierbera del pueblo de Todos Santos (GODESCA Editorial, 2024), La furia y la paz (Premio Mujeres de Morelos, 2018), Leyendas de Metepec (Premio PACMyC), Despierta los minutos (Literatelia, 2019), Amazonas de luz (Editorial Lagares, 2014), Escribe tu vida y oxigena emociones (Lectórum/Quarzo, 2023) y Una empresa llamada Garro (Nos y Otros Editores, Madrid), (Con Garro y sin Paz) y ha sido incluida en vastas antologías de poesía. Dra. Maricela Becerra García es profesora en la Universidad Estatal de California, Channel Islands. Obtuvo su doctorado en Lenguas y Literaturas Hispánicas por la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles (UCLA). Imparte cursos sobre la producción cultural latinoamericana contemporánea, con énfasis en memoria, feminismos y resistencias. Su investigación actual se centra en el análisis interdisciplinario de la violencia de Estado, el trauma y la memoria en México. Su monografía en progreso, “2 de octubre, no se olvida”: (Post)Memories of Mexico‘68, examina las representaciones contemporáneas de la masacre de Tlatelolco 68 desde la generación de la posmemoria. Su proyecto actual explora el uso de las redes sociales en el movimiento feminista en México, particularmente el papel de los hashtags en la denuncia de los feminicidios y las memorias digitales como resistencia.
The Todos Santos Writers Workshop, founded in 2014, is a center for creative writing based in the historic pueblo mágico of Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico. TSWW offers workshops for writers at all levels in Fiction, Memoir, Poetry, and Storytelling Strategies.

About Beyond Baroque
is one of the United States' leading independent Literary | Arts Centers and public spaces dedicated to expanding the public's knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. Founded in 1968 as an experimental literary magazine, Beyond Baroque is based out of the original City Hall building in Venice, California. The Center offers a diverse variety of literary and arts programming including readings and workshops. The building also houses a bookstore with a large collection of new poetry books for sale.
