About this Event
Compton & Newberry
Mike Compton and Joe Newberry mine a rich vein of country music - the period during the ‘30s and '40s when brother duet music was transitioning into what is now known as bluegrass. This two man band works well in the venues large and small that Presenters' Consortium members are looking to program.
As virtuosos of mandolin, banjo, and guitar, combined with their deeply rooted singing, their music has reached audiences at venues such as the Grand Ole Opry, A Prairie Home Companion, Merlefest, the Transatlantic Sessions, as well as the soundtracks of O Brother, Where Art Thou and Cold Mountain.
REX Theater
In 1940, the town of Galax was excited when the historic Rex Theater first opened it’s doors and the public rushed in. Operating as the only movie theater in the twin county area, many area youngsters and families grew up going to the Rex to see the latest Hollywood blockbusters.
Since 1940, the Rex has served as many things to the Galax community. Today, it is owned by the City of Galax, who has renovated it and made it an important part of the officially designated Historical Downtown area.
