Welcome to "Composers in Dialogue," a series of dynamic sessions designed for composers with a focus on pieces involving voice. Curated by composer Mirsaeed Hosseiny Panah in collaboration with VoxLAB and NyMusikks Komponistgruppe, these sessions provide a unique platform for composers, to discuss their work, exchange knowledge, and connect with fellow artists.
Each session offers an opportunity to delve into specific thoughts behind a composition from the composer's perspective. We will listen to excerpts and open the floor for questions.
Singers, musicians, and instrumentalists are encouraged to participate and benefit from this collaborative environment.
Join us for our first session this Thursday, May 23rd, at 18:00, featuring composers Kristin Norderval and Marcus Paus. Their diverse influences, rooted in the New York music scene and their explorations across various genres, promise to offer insightful and enriching discussions.
At nyMusikk's space on Platousgt. 18.
Doors open at 17:30.
This event is free of charge and will last for two hours.
About the composers:
Kristin Norverval:
Kristin Norderval´s career has been twofold; as a singer of contemporary music working with composers such as Philip Glass, Pauline Oliveros, Annea Lockwood and many others, and as a composer-improviser working with technology. Kristin is inspired by hybridity, interactivity, and the idea that everything we do is site-specific. She blends acoustic and electronic sound, and is fascinated with de-tuned instruments, machines, and ambient sound. Kristin´s recording of her solo electro-acoustic works – Aural Histories – was listed as one of Ten Notable Classical Music Recordings of 2012 by The New Yorker music critic Alex Ross. Her opera The Trials of Patricia Isasa (2016) won Quebec´s OPUS prize for best contemporary music and best production. From 2019-2023 Kristin was a PhD Research Fellow at the Oslo National Academy of Opera in Norway, where she developed an Expanded Vocal Improvisation Instrument (EVII) for gestural vocal processing using wireless MIDI rings. Kristin has used the EVII in her latest opera and in collaborations with Limpe Fuchs, Peter van Bergen, and Q4, a quartet with Jill Sigman, Miguel Frasconi and Gustavo Aguilar.
Marcus Paus:
Marcus Paus is one of Norway's most prominent composers, known for his extensive body of work, including chamber music, solo pieces, choral and vocal music, concertos, orchestral works, a symphony, and several operas, as well as theater and film scores. His music has been internationally recognized for its expressiveness and craftsmanship.
Notable recordings of his work include "The Beauty That Still Remains" with Frode Haltli, Det Norske Jentekor, and Anne Karin Sundal-Ask, "Hate Songs" with Tora Augestad and the Oslo Philharmonic, "Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra" with Håkon Kartveit and the Bergen Philharmonic, and "Love's Last Rites" with Henning Kraggerud and NOSO. He also composed the scores for André Øvredal's "Torden" (aka "Mortal") and Sara Johnsen's "Upperdog."
Paus has received several accolades, including the Wessel Prize (2012) and the Music Publishers Award as Composer of the Year (2016). He was nominated for an Amanda Award and a Harpa Award for his film score for "Mortal," and a MovieMusicUK Award as Breakthrough Composer of the Year (2021).
Recent premieres include "Sonata for Violin and Piano," the violin concerto "Voyage," the guitar concerto "Decameron: Concerto Rifugio," "Litanies" for choir and strings, and "Tuba Mirum." In 2022, he released the double album "Cabin Fever: Pandemic Works" and the album "Requiem/Trisyn/Læreren som ikke ble."
In 2023, his notable premieres included "The Munch Room," "The Darkened Room," an orchestral version of "The Beauty That Still Remains," and "Krigkorset," performed by the Norwegian Army Band.
