Spring in the woodland:
Spring flowers are emerging and the birds are singing. Join us on a gentle ramble through the woodland.
For centuries, much of Oaken Wood has been managed as traditional Kentish rotational coppice. This has contributed to the survival of its remarkable flora and fauna, including 'ancient woodland indicator' wildflower species, such as bluebell and wood anemone.
Coppicing boosts biodiversity by bringing light to the woodland floor. Many of the species that depend on this type of habitat have been in significant decline over recent decades. This includes woodland butterflies, whose numbers have dropped by 50% since 1990. Woodlands as special as Oaken Wood must be protected for future generations.
