Transpower are hosting community information days in Makara and Picton about the work we’re doing in the coming years to upgrade Aotearoa’s electricity link between the North and South Islands. This session will be held in Makara.New Zealand’s High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Link has been in service since 1965. It helps keep our electricity system reliable and stable and allows Kiwis to access the lowest-cost electricity across both islands. It’s a critical piece of our national grid. The current HVDC cables were installed in 1991 and have an expected 40-year lifespan, so they need to be replaced by the early 2030s.
As well as replacing the three existing cables and adding a fourth cable, Transpower’s planned renewal programme includes building new cable termination stations at Oteranga Bay and Ōraumoa/Fighting Bay. This work is expected to start in the summer of 2027/2028.
Construction is still some time away, but we want to share our plans with communities near our sites and hear from them about how we can best understand and manage possible impacts.
Come along to Makara Community Hall on Sunday May 3, 10am-2pm.
