What We Learn When We Archive
The Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA) makes accessible records of and about Muslims across the country. Despite a long standing presence of Muslims on this land, our histories are oftentimes missing from Canadaβs memory institutions. MiCA exists to fill these gaps; acquiring, preserving, and sharing materials relating to Muslim heritage. Join MiCA archivist Mitra Fakhrashrafi for a talk on how the archives - through words, images and material objects - can deepen our understanding of the past, present, and future of Muslim life. Together, we will trace the limitations of existing archival frameworks, consider the possibilities of participatory practices and discuss practical tools for organizing and archiving living Muslim history.
Mitra is a curator and archivist at the Muslims in Canada Archives. Mapping the legacies of colonial infrastructure and the resistance which has always followed ground and guide her work. In 2020, Mitra published a Master's thesis on shisha bans, surveillance and Muslim 'place-making' in the Greater Toronto Area. As a curator, Mitra has exhibited across Canada at museums and galleries including the Textile Museum of Canada, the Art Gallery of Guelph, InterAccess, and more. As an archivist, Mitra is interested in connecting records and stories to people who find meaning in them.
