Community Food Resilience Planning

Community Growing connects people with the wider discussion on the production of our food ( – where does it come from? how fresh is it? what has it been sprayed with?) and with food justice and security.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, staff and volunteers in the community growing sector worked tirelessly to ensure their neighbours remain fed and connected. Sudden disruptions to food supply, food access, and price stability led to widespread food insecurity. Communities who stepped in to provide food for the most vulnerable faced multiple challenges, which they faced admirably, bringing compassion, generosity and mutual aid to life.

Alongside the risks of another pandemic, risks from climatic, economic and political shocks are increasing. We have an opportunity to reset priorities. Can we transition to a new way of organising our local food systems that takes account of nature and our changing world? – the seed has been planted.

Government is ultimately responsible for our food security, but while we wait, what can we do? Can communities lead the way?

This workshop will help us to discuss together what we need to be more prepared. We'll look at ideas around seed saving, supporting local producers, community composting, community growing, community shops and larders, and the skills we need to get started. This workshop is the beginning of a longer programme of trainings to increase our food resilience in Northern Ireland.

Including experience from Belfast communities who have developed food visions for their neighbourhood, Food Resilience Bingo and a tour of a community garden, this event will provide food for thought in good company.
