Beginning in November, a monthly event to be held at the Unitarian Universalist of Southold Church will take the north fork back to the era before daily technology, when communities found joy in gathering to dance together. Alexandra M. Binder, owner/instructor of Blue Collar Ballroom on Shelter Island and Ballroom/Latin Dancer for 20 years, will teach a half-hour lesson then open the floor for general dancing to a variety of music. Each monthly event will end in time to have a night out on the town or a cozy evening at home. The first month's dance lesson will be the Merengue, a social Latin dance style from the Dominican Republic. This is a great beginner's dance and often used as a warm-up/cool-down. Future Community Dances will feature the Rumba on January 17, Swing on February 21, Foxtrot on March 21, and Hustle on April 18. Please note there will be no event in December.
All ages and abilities are welcome, with and without partners. Suggested attire is casual and comfortable. Comfortable shoes that are securely attached to the foot are best. High heels are not required. The modest $20 includes the lesson and general dance. Teens can attend for $10.
