Community Currency in the UK: Partnership Opportunity with Japanese Innovation Companies

A pioneering UK–Japan initiative is exploring the future of community currency as a tool for local economic resilience and digital innovation. This programme brings together industry, academia, and technology leaders to shape scalable, real-world solutions.

If you are interested in taking part, please complete the Expression of Interest form below.

About the programme

A new UK engagement programme is being developed to introduce an innovative initiative led by Japanese innovation companies. The programme introduces practical implementations of community currency and presents a new theory called vector money, which encompasses community currency within its broader framework.

Community currency will be presented through real-world applications and operational experience. Vector money provides a wider perspective for understanding how value, exchange, and participation can be structured across multiple dimensions.

Together, these perspectives explore how these approaches can support local economies, community participation, social value creation, and new forms of trusted exchange between citizens, businesses, public bodies, and local projects.

Japanese Partner Companies

This programme will introduce the work and future UK collaboration opportunities with:

  • Global Communication Planning Co, Ltd.
  • Good Money Lab General Incorporated Association
  • Transaction Media Networks Inc.

Why this matters now

Community currency is not simply a payment mechanism. It is a practical tool for strengthening local ecosystems by encouraging local spending, supporting community-led projects, enabling new forms of participation, and building trust between individuals, businesses, and institutions. In parallel, vector money is introduced as a concept for thinking about how value and exchange can be structured in more flexible ways.

As digital finance, local development, and social impact continue to evolve, these approaches offer new ways to think about how value can be created and shared within communities.

Programme structure

  • Webinar - 23 July 2026: introduces the concept, the Japanese partners' experience, and the potential UK opportunity. [Specific date to be confirmed.]
  • In-person workshop - 23 October 2026, Cambridge: brings together selected UK organisations interested in future collaboration, implementation and delivery models.

Who should attend

We are particularly interested in engaging with companies and organisations working in:

  • Payment gateway solutions and payment infrastructure
  • FinTech, digital payments, and digital wallets
  • Local authority technology and civic innovation
  • Community engagement and social impact platforms
  • Retail networks, place-making, and regeneration
  • Digital transformation, data platforms, and trusted infrastructure

What the workshop offers

The Cambridge workshop will provide an opportunity to:

  • Engage directly with the Japanese partners
  • Understand the community currency model and the vector money framework
  • Explore potential UK pilot opportunities
  • Identify organisations capable of supporting future delivery, localisation, operation, and scaling

This programme is designed for organisations that are not only interested in technology, but also in the wider social and economic purpose behind it: building stronger communities, supporting local economies, and creating trusted mechanisms for collaboration.

Expression of interest

Interested UK companies and organisations are invited to register for the July webinar and to apply for participation in the Cambridge workshop. Applications will be reviewed by the organising team, and selected attendees will be confirmed in advance.
