Module 1: Building the Foundations: Leading in a time of change.

This module is a key foundational module for the programme in which we aim to build connection with all the participants and build a shared understanding of what brought us all together and why leading climate action in communities matters. For this module we will focus on bringing to life the stories of each participant and exploring questions like:

  • Why did you come here?
  • What are you leading already?
  • Why does this matter to you and what motivates you?
  • What are your pain points and barriers to leading change in your community?

In this module we will also introduce Systems Theory in an accessible and relatable way and help build understanding of systems change and how to build solutions that can support long term behaviour change in the community. This module is influenced by the Community Climate coaches framework and the Work that Reconnects.

The key outcome of this module is to foster connection with all the participants and energise the group in their journey going forward, creating shared language and purpose as they navigate through the proceeding modules.

Module 2: Climate Change and your community

The session will introduce participants to the key themes and actions of Climate Change and explore why these actions are necessary and what this means for your specific community. Following this will be a session on teamwork, collaboration and engagement for community projects and programmes. This module will be co-facilitated by the GAP education team

The following topics will be covered in this session:

  • Introduction to climate change
  • Investigate the world of climate science and how to be informed about action
  • Explore mitigation and adaptation actions taking place in each communities local context - why did they start, who is leading, what actions did they take?
  • Looking at action through a global perspective - why your local actions matter to the global community.
  • Discovering the interconnections between the broad themes of climate change being covered in the training and its link to local community leadership

We will also use this session to introduce participants to the Online Classroom, if participants have not already joined, and to support participants familiarisation with it.

Module 3: Energy Use & Renewable Energy

This will be delivered via a webinar on the theme of Renewable Energy and Sustainable Energy Communities (SEC). The SEC regional mentor for the Ulster region will lead the workshop and introduce their SEC programme in the region. Participants will be able to learn more about SECs and the role they have in their region, engage directly with their regional SEC mentor as well as exploring the pathways to setting up an SEC as part of their respective communities.

SEC mentors are supported by the SEAI who give a framework to communities to set up sustainable energy communities.

Regional SEC mentors are there to guide sustainable energy communities through the stages of development. This includes:

  • Recruiting new members to the SEC Network
  • Sharing success stories from the earlier network members
  • Explaining the benefits and supports available to support projects
  • Providing introductions and site visits to communities of interest
  • Supporting through the energy master plan grant application and to prepare the energy master plan
  • There is also help available in hosting community events, engaging the wider community and on financial grants available that may help you deliver agreed energy projects.

Module 4: Waste and the Circular Economy

Global Action Plan, in partnership with Rediscovery Center will deliver an interactive engaging module on Waste and The Circular Economy which will be delivered in the format of an interactive in person workshop.

The module will address how organisations and clubs can audit their waste and make changes to the amount they generate and the way that they deal with it. It will particularly focus on waste prevention, reduction, reuse and recycling and look at practical solutions for managing waste as a group.

The module will be aimed at adults: individuals, community groups, business owners, and educators to raise awareness within local communities of issues with waste and litter, sustainability and the circular economy; to encourage engagement with sustainable waste management and moving to the circular economy; and to promote behavioural change and community action projects on waste, sustainability and the circular economy.

The module will provide participants with a deeper knowledge of the impacts of waste and litter at local and global levels; sustainable waste management, reuse, recycling, an understanding of environmental, social and economic issues associated with waste, explore individual and local sustainability and the circular economy; and encourage groups to undertake initiatives and action projects in their community. During the workshop, participants will be involved in interactive discussions to examine issues and concerns and explore solutions in relation to waste.

The module will also include a range of hands-on activities to demonstrate effective separation of waste in the home, review of the recycling process from collection to end products and take part in creative activities during the course that demonstrates plastic waste reuse.

Module 5: Water and Climate Change

This module will be led by Feidhlim Harty from Wetlands Systems. Féidhlim Harty is an environmental consultant, teacher and writer. His company, FH Wetland Systems offers designs and guidance on wetland habitat creation, waterway repair and rewilding.

The module will be introduced by a 90 minute online webinar followed by an experiential field trip to a site in the rural Dublin area that allows participants to engage in the practicalities of water flows, conservation and preservation.

Webinar: Water and Climate Webinar

This webinar will examine the relationship between water and climate in the context of both Ireland and the wider world. Initially we'll explore the many ways in which climate breakdown directly influences the availability of water supplies and the incidents of flooding and ways that we can mitigate these impacts in our local gardens, farms and communities. Another aspect to the relationship between climate and water is the influence of land management and its influence on water flows and dynamics and the often surprising impact that these can have on weather patterns and weather related impacts such as droughts, flooding and wildfires.

Key objectives:

  • How climate breakdown impacts on water availability, flooding and droughts
  • Mitigation measures on local and community scale for building resilience
  • How land management impacts on water flow dynamics
  • How water flows have a direct impact on climate and extreme weather events
  • Measures for repair of water flow dynamics within the landscape
  • Exploring the role of animals in building soils, soil carbon and in waterway dynamics.

Module 6: Leadership in Action - Going forth as Climate Leaders in your community

The final session in this training programme will create a space for each group to reflect on what they have gained during the training programme and start to articulate the next steps in their community and formulate action plans together.

This ½ day session will give space for community leaders to gather collective insights on the best course of action in their respective community groups, discuss and agree on priorities and start to take the next steps to taking action.

For leaders that have already started on action plans, it will give a space for reflection on where they are at and what changes, if any, will they make given the learnings they have gained during the training.

This session will also give space to explore the overall impact of the training programme and gather some feedback from participants to help evaluate the programme and learn for future programmes.

There will be two organised field trips for this progarmme. The locations of these trips will be disclosed after the commencement of the training
