From The Tree/ground To The Glass - Come and enjoy the Apple-Pressing Process!
This is a free event - no need to book for Apple-Pressing (ie no need to click 'Going' on this FB event). Come for an hour or all day! No previous experience needed.
Bring any spare apples you have please, either on the day or drop off before.
We can accommodate approx 20 adults and upto 10 kids at any time during the day, and would like as many as possible to be able to engage in the activity!
Please note that kids should be aged 6yrs & above, and need to be supervised by their parent/carer at all times.
We have a large apple-press that works using pressurised water + a small hand operated apple-press for the kids to use.
Apple-pressing is a fun but messy, sticky business, so wear old clothes and shoes/boots. If you have some work/gardening gloves then bring them.
Take part in the full process:
- sterilising all the equipment
- collecting fallen apples from under the trees & sorting out the usable from those to be composted
- mashing up the apples prior to pressing
- pressing the apples to make the juice & composting what's left after the process
- drinking fresh apple juice (bring a container ie 2L bottle to take some away with you, it'll keep for max 4 days if refrigerated)
- pasteurising and bottling apple juice into sterilised bottles
- storing what juice is left in barrels
- end of day clean & wash up
You'll get to have a go at all stages of the process if you can stay long enough. There are also other tasks to do around the orchard & allotment if you are willing - come and have a look around!
Due to space and H&S issues we cannot promise a shared lunch at a particular time, but why not bring your own veggie/vegan snacks to eat, and more to share around?
Facilities at Royate Hill include a compost toilet; running & drinkable water; a firepit for pasteurising bottled juice on; seating area; and a roundhouse to hide in if it pisses down (it won't)!
For any queries or to arrange to drop off large donations of apples (or to arrange a pick up) please contact Mike on 07768 915423
