In January of 1776, Thomas Paine published Common Sense—a simple, powerful argument that helped ignite the push for American independence. It wasn’t complicated. It was clear. And it moved people.Paine believed that when ordinary people come together, their ideas become something greater: “Could the straggling thoughts of individuals be collected, they would frequently form materials for wise and able men to improve into useful matter.”
That same spirit is what built this country—and it’s what we’re stepping into for this month’s ruck. This isn’t just miles for the sake of miles. This is a Common Sense Ruck—a walk through the civic heart of Meadville.
We’ll move together through the places that keep a community running: local government buildings, public spaces, and landmarks that represent service, structure, and history. Think of it as a civics scavenger hunt with weight on your back.
Because the truth is—freedom doesn’t sustain itself. It requires people who show up, pay attention, and stay engaged. So shoulder the ruck, bring a friend, learn something, and put in the work-physically and mentally.

No ruck? No problem! Walkers are always welcome to join us with zero shame. Empty backpacks work too! We all carry different weights according to our personal fitness goals.
Rucking is a form of physical activity that involves walking with a loaded backpack (or ‘rucksack’) over various distances and terrains. (Plate carriers and sandbags are also welcome.) A moderate amount of added weight can produce the same stimulus and metabolic benefit as running, while also strengthening the legs and lower back. Rucking is similar to hiking and is often used as conditioning by backcountry hunters, endurance athletes, and those in the military and emergency services.
