Join Fiona Gault (BA Hons, MA, PhD researcher MU) and Michael McKernon (Literary Executor, The Pádraic Fiacc Archive) for a talk, short film and audience Q&A on the work and life of Poet and Editor Pádraic Fiacc,1924-2019. Fiacc’s work has generated much controversy and opposition, particularly through the most difficult years in Northern Ireland’s history, but his oeuvre is now finding strong resonance in the current times, taking on new importance in a post-Troubles era. Fiacc’s direct confrontation with violence, trauma, poverty and displacement speaks to a vast and varied audience today.
This talk and film will outline how Belfast, Glengormley and the ‘troubled North' as a whole helped shape and reshape Fiacc’s poetic, his philosophy and his life. Since 2024, Gault and McKernon have been holding events all over Ireland celebrating the poet’s centenary, including the unveiling of a Blue Plaque honouring the poet’s cultural significance in August 2025.
