As artist-in-residence at Walter, 𝗦𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 explores the boundary between avant-garde and improvisation, and the Irish folk tradition in which he grew up. For this concert, he composes new material around the estrangement of that tradition and brings together two worlds: Belgian improvisers Jozef Dumoulin and Samuel Ber with Irish folk singer and flutist John Francis Flynn.
Comerford and Flynn once shared the same youth in Dublin, teenagers competing in the flute contests of the Dublin Fleadh – both somewhat out of place there. Yet Flynn is today one of the most intriguing voices in folk. He approaches traditional Irish songs in a unique way: dissecting, analyzing, and reconstructing them. Sam sets up this encounter precisely to bring these radical visions of tradition together, complemented by the distinctive musical personalities of Ber and Dumoulin. Four days and one evening of dialogue at Walter.
New work also appears in 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗵 𝗡𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹’s universe. With the release of Themes and Variations, he explores how composition and improvisation can reinforce each other. Classical theme-and-variation forms serve as the basis for short, often monothematic pieces, interspersed with free, melodic interludes. Live, this translates into uninterrupted sets navigating from abstract intensity to hypnotic ostinati and lyrical expressiveness.
Arguably the highlight of Walter’s autumn program when it comes to tradition, composition, and improvisation. Five musicians, each on their own quest for sound, structure, and expression. Each set with its own logic, its own surprises.
