Come Together: Creating Impact through Community Collaboration

Join us for this collaborative workshop focused on breaking down barriers to politics and municipal leadership!
About this Event

In this workshop, we're tackling 3 key barriers for women and underrepresented genders in politics and municipal leadership:

  • Safety and Harassment
  • Finance and Fundraising
  • Early Learning and Childcare

Participants will be divided into teams and tasked with developing an innovative solution to one of these critical barriers. The solutions may be policy-focused, grass-roots community initiatives, a mutual aid model, or maybe a social enterprise -- whatever you choose!

Participants will be provided with info on their topic and we'll have facilitators available to support teams in developing their ideas. The teams will gather back together and take turns presenting their ideas to the full group, with time for networking and discussion as well.

While we may not solve all of these complex challenges in one evening, we hope participants will see the power of community collaboration and how we can make a difference by working together.

We are hosting this in-person event at Platform Calgary. If you have any questions regarding the accessibility of the venue, please feel free to reach out to us.

We're excited to see you there!

Dr. Rachael Pettigrew

Dr. Rachael Pettigrew is an associate professor of general management and human resources at the Bissett School of Business at Mount Royal University. Rachael’s primary research focus is gender in the workplace and organizational culture. Recent projects have explored fathers' parental leave use and employer adaptation to the new 61-week parental leave legislation. Her current SSHRC-funded research focuses on gender-diverse boards and individuals' experiences, aspirations, and barriers faced on the path to board work. Her secondary area of interest includes workplace equity, diversity and inclusion, including immigration and newcomer employment. Pettigrew has almost 20 years of university teaching experience, is a public speaker, and is regularly engaged with industry.

Dr. Lisa Young

Lisa Young is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Calgary. Dr. Young has published extensively in the field of Canadian politics, authoring/co-authoring several books, including Rebuilding Canadian Party Politics, Feminists and Party Politics, and Advocacy Groups. Her current research projects focus on Alberta politics, political and party finance, and graduate education in the social sciences and humanities. She appears frequently in the media commenting on Alberta and Canadian politics.

Melanee Thomas

Melanee Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Calgary. Her research broadly addresses the causes and consequences of gender-based political inequity, with a particular focus on political attitudes and behaviour. Melanee's objectives are to identify how Canadians think about themselves in politics, explain how this is structured by gender and sexism, and racism and colonialism, and then develop potential solutions that ameliorate and strengthen our democratic politics.
