Broadcasting from the uneasy sway of a wheat field at sunset, LIGHTS OUT makes songs of soft emotional demolition, moving at about a mile a year and emphasizing their points in whispers. The core duo of Jane Hesser and John Kolodij (High aura’d, The Pines of Rome) are joined in these flickering songs of dream-born Americana by drummer Phoebe Summersquash (Small Factory), bassist Ken Linehan (rebuilthangertheory, Difference Engine), and pedal steel player Brian Jablonski (The Low Cards). Califone/Decemberists drummer Rachel Blumberg stops by to play drums on a few tracks, and there are appearances from Francesca Caruso (The Infinity Ring) on violin and Emily Dix Thomas (Nova One, Huntress and The Holder of Hands) on cello as well. The eleven songs of debut album What’s Not To Love all connect as they gradually unfurl like an evening-long exhalation. LIGHTS OUT filters the weary radiance of slowcore and the grainy dust of American roots music through something strange and ever so slightly experimental, landing in a beautiful melancholia that’s deeper than expected and hard to leave.
