REGISTRATION BEGINS AUGUST 1, 2024
Join Barbara Wingo of Norman Studios Silent Film Museum for an exploration of Jacksonville’s illustrious history in moving pictures. In 1916, the Eagle Film Manufacturing Company built a film studios complex in the Jacksonville suburb of Arlington at the time when Jacksonville was considered the “Winter Film Capital of the World.” Richard E. Norman would buy the complex in 1923-1924 to continue making “race films,” films that presented African Americans in non-stereotypical ways. Learn about the restoration and regeneration of this National Historic Landmark complex as a museum and educational center.
Barbara Wingo is the president of the Norman Studios Silent Film Museum and is a frequent lecturer on silent films, Norman Studios, Florida art, and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Barbara is currently a courtesy history professor at the University of Florida after serving 30 years as an adjunct member of the university’s Department of History. She received her Juris Doctor degree cum laude from Southern Methodist University, her Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in history from Tulane University, and her Bachelor of Arts degree with great distinction from Stanford University. She has served as the president of the Friends of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Farm, the Friends of Music at the University of Florida, and the St. Augustine Historical Society, and has served on the St. Augustine Historic Architectural Review Board. She is the owner of Time Zones Antiques and Collectibles. Barbara is retired from the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel of the University of Florida where she served as associate vice president and deputy general counsel. She has received the University of Florida Presidential Medallion and is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
