Lucrezia Borgia by Victor Hugo tells the story of the criminal, adulterous, and incestuous Lucrezia Borgia, who seeks to escape the evil of her fate and be recognized and loved by Gennaro, the child she had with her brother. During a ball in Venice, Gennaro courts a beautiful masked lady, only to discover to his horror that she is Lucrezia. Stung by the insults of Gennaro’s friends and suspected of adultery by her husband, Lucrezia sets in motion a heartbreaking act of revenge.
