About this Event
Co-presented by
7th House, in co-presentation with The Windmills of Your Mind—DJ and music supervisor Taylor Rowley's bi-weekly NTS radio show, a boundlessly curious excavation of neglected musical histories where private-press obscurities, lost soundtracks, and forgotten folk recordings drift together in sumptuous harmony—is incredibly proud to present the US theatrical premiere of the new restoration of COLOURFUL DREAMS (Värvilised unenäod, 1974), a long-hidden treasure of Estonian cinema. Blending children's fantasy, experimental filmmaking, and an infectious spirit of play, directors Jaan Tooming and Virve Aruoja crafted a freewheeling and exuberantly inventive work that unfolds with the free-associative logic of a child's imagination, transforming our familiar world into a place of awe, mystery, and adventure.
At its center is five-year-old Kati, spending the summer at her grandmother's countryside home. There, the wind, flowers, stones, animals, and sky become her companions as imagination and reality merge into a single enchanted world. As Kati conjures suns, soars above flower-filled fields, and explores the universe through play, Colourful Dreams becomes a tender celebration of childhood curiosity, creativity, and the infinite possibilities hidden within the everyday.
Originally conceived as a conventional children's film, Tooming and Aruoja largely abandoned the screenplay during production, transforming it into an improvisatory work of remarkable freedom and invention that baffled Soviet censors. Shot by cinematographer Rein Maran in dazzling, color-soaked imagery and featuring a luminous early score from legendary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, the film blithely floats between reality and fantasy, where the pastoral countryside becomes a realm of perpetual discovery and the ordinary becomes strange, beautiful, and surprising.
Preceded by a handpicked short film program curated by co-programmer Taylor Rowley, join us for the US theatrical premiere of the gorgeous restoration of this little-known gem—a joyously beautiful, one-of-a-kind ode to childhood wonder.
