About this Event

Queer nightlife stakeholders huny young (HUNY XO), Samira Mendoza (MIRA MIRA), and Ricky Mawzlin of Jellyfish share their experience with queer nightlife in Pittsburgh and elsewhere. Join the dialogue to hear about what is currently being offered, what is needed, and how can we continue to evolve in order to better serve our communities together. Tickets available on a sliding scale from $0-$20. Tickets are available on a sliding scale. Any proceeds will help support honoraria to the featured speakers & Brew House Arts exhibition programming. Space is limited.


ABOUT THE PANELISTS

MIRA MIRA aka Samira Mendoza is a fearless & expressive sonic manipulator, performance artist, and organizer whose work bridges personal history, diasporic reflection, and collective transformation. They are a member of Las Mariquitas, Dendarry Bakery, Recao Rulé, To Ara, Dyspheric, the Uhaul Disco, 8 Ball Community, DJs Against Apartheid, and Juventud Unida por la Independencia.

huny young, aka HUNY XO (she/they), is a DJ and event curator soundtracking and producing events via the Mostbeautifullest collective.Originally from New York, NY and currently based in Pittsburgh (named Person of the Year in Music 2021 by Pittsburgh City Paper), huny's work in music and the visual arts is rooted in exalting Black women & QTBIPOC communities. As a co-founder and the Experience Lead of Honcho's Queer Fam Fund, as well as consulting on diversity outreach for other festivals, her mission to expand visibility and access in nightlife culture is a through-line in everything she tackles.Beyond PGH, huny has played NYC, LA, SF, Philly, Detroit, Puerto Vallarta, and Morelos, MX. Her festival credits include Honcho Campout, Somos, Desertopia, and Bahidora.


ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

When the Lights Come On, Curated by Hannah Turpin, brings together local, national, and international artists reflecting on their experiences of queer nightlife. The exhibition looks at these gatherings as sites of communal adaptation and resilience, amplifying how radical love and pleasure are necessary for imagining a more liberated future. The exhibition features artists working across various materials, including textile, projection, drawing, printmaking, and photography. Exhibited artists include Harrison Apple, Théo Bignon, Clint Fisher, ggggrimes, Jules Malice, Amanda Pickler, Nica Ross, Janie Stamm, Mary Tremonte, True T Pittsburgh, Jimmy Wright, and sarah huny young.
