About this Event

Join the Boston Public Art Triennial and Collective Futures Fund (CFF) to learn about exciting opportunities for artists and cultural workers at each organization, ask questions to our team, and hear from CFF and Triennial alumni about their practice and experience with our organizations.

Collective Futures Fund will share about their artist grants supporting independent projects and artistic research in the Greater Boston area and strategies for strong applications.

The Boston Public Art Triennial will share about their Public Art Accelerator program: a skill-building and grant-funding program that supports early-to-mid-career Boston-based artists in creating temporary public art projects in neighborhoods across the city.

Afterwards you’ll hear from two previous CFF grantees AND Triennial Accelerator alumni about their projects, practices, and how the respective programs supported their artistic growth.

The Artists:

Nelly Anderson (she/her) is a studio artist with an expanded practice in sound. She treats access as a site for poetic translation through the lens of Queer and late-Deaf experience. Her practice is about reaching across the senses to translate phenomena which our bodies sense but cannot readily name. It often takes the form of installation, print, video, sound, performance, and text.

Nelly insists upon things like: films that are slow, spaces that are soft, the awkwardness of inclusion, saying more, and repeating ourselves. She is currently a visiting professor at Northeastern University facilitating seminars in Media Art, Culture, and Social Justice and a research associate with MIT Spatial Sound Lab studying methods for spatializing open captions and haptics. Nelly Kate hails from the American South and works on the unceded lands of the Pawtucket, Massachusett, and Naumkeag nations.

Gabriel Sosa:

Gabriel Sosa is a Cuban-American artist, linguist, educator, and curator. He draws from legal proceedings, personal archives, and contemporary visual culture to explore the mutability of language, the imperfection of memory, and the misinterpretation of both. His work has been shown at Fitchburg Art Museum; The Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco; Fábrica de Arte Cubano, Havana, Cuba; Tufts University Art Galleries; A R E A, Boston; O, Miami Poetry Festival; Now + There; and Museo La Tertulia, Cali, Colombia. He has participated in residencies at Lugar a dudas, The Art & Law Program, Materia Abierta, Urbano Project, Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, Mass MoCA, and Santa Fe Art Institute. Raised in Miami, Gabriel teaches at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and serves as Deputy Director of Essex Art Center in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

About Collective Futures Fund:

The Collective Futures Fund is an initiative directly supporting visual artists and artist-run activity in the Greater Boston area through grants of $3,000 and $8,000. We help incubate artists’ visions for their own independent platforms and research to support the futures of our vibrant local artist communities.

About the Boston Public Art Triennial:

Boston Public Art Triennial is the city’s first and only public art organization dedicated to supporting artists and communities in bold, contemporary, public art with annual artwork commissions and an every-three-year citywide exhibition. One of The Triennial's core programs is the annual Public Art Accelerator––a juried, cohort-based, skill-building and grant funding program that prepares emerging and mid-career artists to create temporary, large-scale public art projects in Boston. This program breaks the closed-loop system of public art.
