Did you know there are over 11,000 Chinese objects in Durham University’s Oriental Museum? The collection is not just sizeable but also significant, being Designated by Arts Council England. How did a small northern town like Durham come to have such a large and important Chinese collection? In this talk, Qin will discuss her curation of the Chinese collection at the Oriental Museum, from its formation history, recent research, to public dissemination to diverse audiences.


About the speaker

Dr Qin Cao is the Curator of Chinese Collections at the Oriental Museum, Durham University. With specialisms in Chinese Bronze Age material culture and numismatics, she is inspired to promote and deepen understanding of China through museum objects, how collections reflect the circumstances and historical contexts of their collecting, and their relevance to the present. Prior to joining the Oriental Museum in 2022, Dr Cao was the Senior Curator of China at National Museums Scotland.
