-Let’s explore the human head with collage.
(representational or abstract approaches are equally valid)
-The artists in this class will utilize and explore their subjects through light, surface, structure and physical use of their unique collage materials.
-We will discuss a variety of artists and create an independent visual statement in this class.
-The artist in this class will be asked to bring a variety of flattish, glueable materials to utilize in their project.
*****Materials: Participants are asked to bring Materials listed below if possible. Liggett Studio will provide paint, some paper, cardboard, and glue. Please bring materials you find interesting to collage with. It would also be helpful if you brough paper prepped with acrylic paint, gouache, ink, watercolor, crayons, conte crayon, etc. (or all mixed together). It would be a good idea to prep your paper with a wide range of values or if you’re working with a wide range of color consider hue, value, and intensity as you’re prepping your paper.*****
-We will use archival and nonarchival materials.
-Each artist will to collage with materials they haven’t used before or possibly seen used before as collage.
-Archival examples – nice paper prepped with acrylic paint, gouache, ink, watercolor, crayons, conte crayon, etc. (or all mixed together). It would be a good idea to prep your paper with a wide range of values or if you’re working with a wide range of color consider hue, value, and intensity as you’re prepping your paper.
-Nonarchival examples – paper, cardboard, matt board, wall paper, fabric, clothing, string, rope, found objects, etc.
-It’s nice to consider the relationship of the materials to the subject.
About Mark Lewis:
Mark was born in Oklahoma City. He began his undergraduate studies at Oklahoma State University and completed his BFA in Painting at the Kansas City Art Institute (1982). He received his MFA in Painting at Yale University (1984). He has taught as an adjunct and visiting artist at several institutions including American University, Georgetown University, the New York Studio School, Mt Gretna School of Art, Chautauqua, and the University of Virginia. He recently retired from The University of Tulsa where he taught painting, drawing, and collage. Lewis is represented by the Bowery Gallery in New York City.
