About this Event
The workshop starts from the idea, found in the work of Keith A. Smith and Hedi Kyle, that the structure of a book shapes how it is used and read. Rather than serving as a neutral container, the book becomes an interactive object that moves, opens in various ways, and invites hands-on engagement. The meaning shifts based on how the book is handled, folded, or rearranged.
Participants will create a non-adhesive book using the collapsible star piano-hinge binding developed by Hedi Kyle and discussed by Smith. This format allows for an unfolding and shifting experience, enabling diverse reading paths and visual relationships between images and text, making this book's structure perfect for collage thinking.
The session begins with a short introduction to the structure, followed by step-by-step construction of the book. Once the form is complete, participants will work with collage using images, text, or both. Attention is given to how content can be distributed across the pages so that movement through the book is not linear, so that the book can be experienced in multiple ways, pauses, and returns as the structure opens and closes.

Collage Working Club (CWC) is a weekly open workspace for artists working in the medium of paper. Organised in the format of alternate ‘drop in’ sessions and workshops masterclasses, it has both a regular facilitator, whilst also involving the artist community in the sharing of knowledge and skills. Providing materials, education and connections is the primary aim of CWC, and it will do this through the interdisciplinary art of collage as both an art form and a tool for personal growth.
