Collage Filmmaking Workshop

Workshop Structure:

PART 1: RATIONALE& INSPIRATION (20 min)

* Collage filmmaking principles and approach

* 5-minute highlight reel: Terry Gilliam, Sita Sings the Blues, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, [others]

PART 2: COLLECTIVE NARRATIVE (30 min)

* Group decides on loose narrative/concept for a 1 minute film- format can be an advertisement, mini-documentary, or retelling of a fairy tale/ myth

* Identify needed elements and visual approach

* Divide tasks for gathering materials

PART 3: MATERIAL GATHERING (45 min)

* Photograph found objects, street letters, toys at wild scales

* Film quick actions for rotoscoping

* Create cutouts using iOS stickers + Photoshop auto-background removal

* Source punk zine-esque textures, collage ephemera

* Record/generate audio elements (Splice, Suno)

PART 4: LIVE ASSEMBLY (75 min)

* Composite in Procreate Dreams with materials from After Effects

* Layer elements with mismatched scales and frame rates

* Integrate audio

* Patch gaps as needed, embrace accidents

FINAL: SCREENING (10 min)

Techniques Explored: Physical cutouts, iOS stickers, auto-background removal, found materials, guerrilla filming, rotoscoping, radical scale shifts, punk texture, narrative mashups, audio recontextualization, largely focused in Procreate Dreams but incorporating several other methods of audio/ visual hacking
