Coffee Morning with Essex Babylab
‘Sing Together, Feel Closer: The Power of Music for Parent–Child Connection’
Thursday 4th December
10:00 – 11:30am
At Health, Wellbeing and Care Hub, University of Essex (CO4 3GS)
Zehra is a developmental psychologist who studies how parents and babies communicate emotions. Her work explores how emotional expressions in songs can help babies’ emotional growth and strengthen the parent–child bond. Zehra holds degrees in Psychology and Child Development from Roehampton, UCL and Goldsmiths, where she examined the effects of emotional valence and musical familiarity on infant emotion and communication. Zehra now teaches undergraduate psychology students as an Associate Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Kate works as a freelance music educator and advisor. She is involved in training teachers in the therapeutic and educational benefits of music and the arts. As a natural voice practitioner, Kate also works with Singing Mamas, a national community interest company (CIC).

Kate has seen first-hand how singing can support and transform mental well-being. In Singing Mamas, the singing is primarily for the women. She believes that singing together helps us connect with ourselves, our babies and the other women we sing with. Kate’s session attendees often tell her that they lose touch with themselves during the perinatal period, which can affect their mood and sense of well-being.

Kate is also currently an MA student in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. She holds an undergraduate degree in Music and a PGCE in Primary Education. A firm believer that the biggest hurdle is believing that singing is something we can all participate in, Kate continues to champion inclusive and therapeutic approaches to music.
