When we think about historic cocktails today, a lot of people imagine glamorous Prohibition-era speakeasies. But in truth, most speakeasies were really divey affairs, and not much mixology was happening in them. The real creative period in the development of cocktails was the period from the 1860’s to just before Prohibition, and it’s this period that we are thinking of when we talk about the Golden Age. This is when many of our most loved and appreciated cocktails were created, as well as a few that were loved in their time and have mostly disappeared today. We’re going to talk about their history and mix some up.

Sherry Cobbler (sherry), Old Fashioned (whiskey), Manhattan (whiskey), Martini (gin), Bijou (gin), Pisco Punch (brandy), Clover Club (gin)

The Last Word is closed during the class, so no food service is available. The class includes a combination of history and stories, technique instruction, and hands-on making of cocktails. Plus sampling, of course! Total consumption is equivalent to around 2 cocktails per person over the 2 hour class. Please anticipate working with other groups, sharing ingredients, and doing a mix of sitting or standing throughout the class.

Please note that we have a restricted table layout and use communal seating. Parties of two will almost always be seated with at least one other party of two. Groups of four or more will usually have their own table. You may request a private table in the “seat with” section of the booking form, and we will attempt to honor your request, but there is no guarantee that one will be available. If you have allergies or need a mocktail menu instead please also let me know in the “seat with” section so I get the message early enough to make accomidations.
