This clowning workshop is designed specifically for performers. We will use playful exercises to explore clown perspective, focusing on the clown’s relationship to audience and how to find joy on stage.
About the instructor:
Ania (they/them) is a queer and trans performer, theatre maker, educator and clown. A graduate of the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre, much of their work is transdisciplinary, including the forms of theater, clown, circus and music under their company Butch Mermaid Productions. Ania has performed at NYC venues including Dixon Place, Lincoln Center, BAM and House of Yes. Transhumance, Ania’s solo clown show about the experience of being transgender, was performed at the Kennedy Center in June 2024 for Pride Month. Ania holds a Masters degree in Applied Theater from the City University of New York and teaches for a range of theater organizations, including Professor of Clown at Montclair University and Jokering for Theater of the Oppressed NYC. This is a clowning workshop taught by Ania Upstill, the producer of Transhumance.
If you attend the workshop you get free admission to Transhumance on Wednesday, April 29th at 8pm. You'll get a stamp in the workshop which will give you entry to the show at The Cherry Arts.
