Hackenwerth, who is based in St. Petersburg, was born in St. Louis, MO, received a BFA in Printmaking and an MFA in Painting. His unique style and voice in both sculpture and painting has resonated around the globe. His art has been exhibited in Switzerland, Italy, South Korea, England, Scotland, Mexico, UAE, China, and Russia.
Closer to home, he has been a dedicated and catalyzing part of the art community. He founded and operates Sixstar Art Studios, an artist collective in St. Petersburg, and twice received the Creative Pinellas Professional Artist Grant for artists of outstanding talent and ability "who bring recognition, awareness and interest to the community, inspire other artists and art lovers, and help make Pinellas County a vibrant arts and cultural destination." Most recently, Hackenwerth was selected as one of ten artists chosen for the prestigious Orlando Museum of Art 2026 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art, the winner of which will be announced May 29. Leslie Curran (ARTicles Gallery owner) noted, "To be one of ten chosen for this award is a tremendous honor. Our gallery is thrilled for Jason and incredibly proud to represent his works."
Because of their introspective nature, Hackenwerth's paintings defy easy description. They are "an abstraction of symmetry through emotional freedom. . . . when a core, baseline human psyche gets splashed in vivid color onto canvas." [The Artisan, March 6, 2025] The new works featured in Cloud of Dust will continue this internal reflection. As Hackenwerth himself has said about one piece, "There is an indescribable quality that I’m looking for. . . . How does one capture the sense of longing and nostalgia mixed with despair and sarcasm, and still filled with love for the whole thing?"
After the June 5th opening reception, Hackenwerth will present an Artist Talk about his work at ARTicles on June 11th from 12-1 pm. The Cloud of Dust exhibition will remain on display at ARTicles Gallery until July 3.
