About this Event
The first half of this session, "Extreme Heat, Flooding & Hurricanes — Building a Disability Accessible Climate Resilience Plan for Miami" centers on building a disability-accessible climate resilience plan for Miami. Hosted by The Advocacy Network on Disabilities, this panel will expand engagement with vulnerable communities, provide actionable preparedness guidance, and position Miami Climate Week as a leader in accessible and inclusive climate resilience. By convening cross-sector stakeholders—including disability advocates, emergency management officials, public health experts, and environmental partners—the event will strengthen collaboration and integrate accessibility into broader climate planning efforts. Leaders including Irenaida Diaz and Carlos Kaiser will participate in this discussion.
At noon, the event shifts to a panel discussion regarding Climate Relocation and its impacts on different communities throughout Miami and across the globe. Central questions will include:
- Why is “high ground” now becoming a luxury, and how does climate play a role?
- What are the human rights consequences of climate relocation? What is at stake for communities?
- What can communities and governments do to prepare for these challenges?
- What policies are needed to protect communities, and address their needs during planned relocations?
Panel speakers for this session will be Dr. Marcie Washington of FIU's Commons for Justice and Dr. Erica Bower of the Human Rights Watch.
