The power use of IT equipment for computing and data storage has been a big issue in the energy debate but it has exploded with the rapid role out of AI. AI server farms are drawing huge amount of electricity from the grid, increasing the cost to normal users and of course contributing to global warming if the electricity is not renewable. Its also using vast amounts of water. So its time to find out more. We have three speakers on the subject.
Brendan Hyland, CEO of SeabedDC will talk about the steps his company are taking to provide low-impact systems for AI by building server farms under the sea.
Andrew Wright of ICEX, will talk from the perpective of an IT partner aiming to be the most sustainable in the country
Dr Keith Skene from the University of Dundee will offer insights on the subject gathered while writing his book Artificial intelligence and the environmental crisis-Can technology really save the world?
After the three fifteen-minute talks there will be 40 minutes of Q&A where you can find out what you want to know.
The event will start at 7pm but feel free to come in to NESCOL from 6:30 as there is a cafe so you can get a drink and socialise with the other attendees. Please note, the easiest way to find the Climate Cafe is to use the Loch Street entrance to NESCol.
