About this Event

Hybrid In-person / Online Event

We will hear from two expert speakers, addressing different facets of

sustainability with practical advice on integrating embodied carbon

considerations into everyday structural engineering work.

First, Muiris Moynihan from Laing O’Rourke will provide an important update on

the institution’s sustainability initiatives, outlining both the new standards

expected of members and the resources available to support compliance. He’ll

then given a concise CPD briefing, offering practical techniques to calculate

embodied carbon quickly and accurately in your own projects.

Next, we'll dive into real-world applications: Richa Sud from TTW will share a

compelling case study demonstrating how embodied carbon was effectively

integrated into a project’s design phase.

The evening will conclude with a dynamic panel discussion featuring both

speakers, offering an interactive Q&A session to explore your questions and

insights further.

Speaker 1`:

Muiris Moynihan, Technical Leader for Sustainability, Laing O’Rourke

Muiris is the Sustainability Technical Leader at Laing O’Rourke, working to

decarbonise construction projects in collaboration with designers, clients and

supply-chain partners. He has over 15 years’ experience spanning design,

research (both academic and applied), and construction delivery, gained in

Europe and Australia. His PhD examined ways to use less material in

construction, which he has translated into practice through a number of

innovative initiatives, including award-winning low-carbon precast columns. A

chartered structural engineer and environmentalist, he is Chair of the Institution

of Structural Engineers’ Sustainability Panel, advocating for efficient, low-carbon

design in the built environment. He also sits on the Institution’s Climate

Emergency Task Group and Australia Regional Group committee.

Speaker 2:

Richa Sud, Sustainable Design Lead, TTW

Richa is the Sustainable Design Lead at TTW, working at the intersection of

engineering, data, and strategy to reduce emissions from the built environment.

With a background in structural engineering and data analytics, she focuses on

integrating sustainability into business strategy and project delivery. Her work

connects TTW’s digital tools with everyday engineering practice to enable

practical, project-based interventions that support low-carbon outcomes. She

ensures embodied carbon is treated as a core design parameter from early

concept through to construction. She works towards making sustainability

tangible and achievable, translating strategic intent into real-world impact across

projects and portfolios.
