Femme Films presents... Cleo From 5 to 7 (1962)
Join us for an event at New House Art Space
Femme Films is a volunteer run community cinema based in the Woking/Guildford area that aims to champion female-led films that go often overlooked in mainstream cinemas.
Agnès Varda’s second feature remains a highlight of the extraordinary outpouring of French movies in the early 60s. Following a pop singer around the streets and parks of Paris as she whiles away two hours awaiting the results of some medical tests, this subtle, innovative character study also succeeds brilliantly as a stylish, vivid documentary-style portrait of a wondrously vibrant city.
Cleo from 5 to 7 tackles themes of femininity, the male gaze, identity, mortality and performance in such delicate ways through incredibly rich visual storytelling. If you are unfamiliar with Varda’s work or the French New Wave in general, prepare to be shown the world in a way you’ve never seen before. One that rejects traditional cinematic techniques, conventions and instead favours innovation, self-reflexivity and low-budget on-location filmmaking.
Doors will be open from 6:30pm with an introduction and short film (TBC) starting from 7:15(ish) with the film aiming to start by 7:45 the latest. Feel free to stick around and chat after the film finishes and share your thoughts!!
