Speech Therapy Boot Camp Day is a fun and educational one-day event hosted by the Cleft and Craniofacial Center at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. It's designed to focus on improving speech intelligibility and communication skills by targeting accurate oral placement for sound production and eliminating compensatory speech errors. Participants will also be able to interact with other families in a relaxing environment and develop friendships.
*At least one parent must remain at the boot camp throughout the day.
ACTIVITIES
- Our cleft and craniofacial team, speech and language pathologist, and community providers will provide fun and social activities to improve speech intelligibility.
- Parents will be provided with training on ways to stimulate their child’s speech production and will be provided with specific home program recommendations.
- Patients and families can interact with the team, community providers, and other families.
- Patients will be grouped according to age and needs.
CEUs
0.8 CEUs for state and ASHA. May not be used for ASHA ACE Award.
COURSE DESCRIPTION (Professional SLPs)
Children with velopharyngeal dysfunction present challenges for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in all settings. This seminar is designed to provide current theoretical information as well as practical hands-on experience for treating patients with velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD).
The first portion of the conference will be theory and clinical-based information conducted in a lecture format. The presenters will provide an overview about the topic of velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) focusing on therapy guidelines including evaluation and treatment.
The second portion of the conference will be interactive and hands-on. Patients and families from our cleft and craniofacial center will be invited to participate in our speech therapy boot camp. Campers will be grouped according to their age and needs and participants will be able to apply the knowledge obtained from the lecture during a variety of social, language, and speech activities.

- Late fee: Add $20 (after July 1, 2023)
Student Volunteers
- Free for volunteer service, does not include lunch. If you would like lunch, it's $10 per student.
