Introduced by film historian John Martello.At a carnival in Germany, Francis and his friend Alan encounter the crazed Dr. Caligari. The men see Caligari showing off his somnambulist, Cesare, a hypnotized man who the doctor claims can see into the future. Shockingly, Cesare then predicts Alan's death, and by morning his chilling prophecy has come true - making Cesare the prime suspect.
Over 100 years old, the film was deemed revolutionary upon its release. Since then, film critics, including Roger Ebert, have deemed The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to be the first true horror film. continues to inspire with its use of intense Expressionist set designs. Among the films that owe much to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari are FW Murnau’s Nosferatu and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. In the United States, the film is credited with its characters inspiring Universal Studios’ horror films in the 1930’s, as well as Dracula, Svengali, and more, and the stark visual style and anxious narrative tone heavily influenced film noir.
