Civic Networking Event: The Importance of Partnerships in Research

Join us for our next Civic Networking Event, where we'll explore the importance of partnerships in research and how collaboration creates lasting impact in our communities.
The Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) is a five year project funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). It focuses on ensuring local authorities use research to support public health in local decision making. HDRC Portsmouth is a collaboration between Portsmouth City Council, HIVE Portsmouth and the University of Portsmouth, we are in year one of the project and have been working with council, academics, ans community members to develop potential research projects.
Our speakers, Dr Nikki Fairchild and Deborah Hodson, will offer insight into working relationally in research, from stakeholder engagement to community co-production.
What to Expect:
Dr Nikki Fairchild, Academic Lead for the Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC), will introduce the HDRC – a partnership between Portsmouth City Council, HIVE Portsmouth, and the University of Portsmouth, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research. She’ll share how the collaboration is addressing complex local health challenges through relationship-centred research.
Deborah Hodson, Community Research Engagement Lead, HDRC Portsmouth, will explore the principles and practice of co-production — what it means, what it isn’t, and examples of best practise. Her reflections will highlight how to embed meaningful involvement in research, ensuring communities are not just participants, but true partners.

About the HDRC
The Health Determinants Research Collaboration is focused on improving the lives of people in Portsmouth by addressing the root causes of health inequality. Current development projects include exploring how social disadvantage impacts language and communication in early years — a key factor in long-term health and education outcomes.
