About this Event

Join City Club of Portland’s Health & Public Safety Issue Committee for a panel discussion of the complex relationship between mental health, addiction, and the legal system.

Our panelists are law enforcement and corrections professionals who work closely with individuals who have interacted with the legal system in a variety of contexts. They will discuss how to improve outcomes for individuals living with mental health and substance use disorders who have been arrested, served time in Pr*son, or faced disciplinary procedures.
Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges people face when seeking support from social services or healthcare providers, and the gaps that need to be filled to reduce the number of individuals who fall through the cracks and end up in our legal system.
Together, let's work toward building a stronger social safety net so that anyone experiencing fluctuations in mental health or substance use can easily and affordably get the help they need to return to society and live healthy, thriving lives.

About the Panelists
  • Nicole Buscher, President of the Multnomah County Corrections Deputies Association
  • Brian Martinek, Executive Director of Northwest Regional Re-entry Center
  • Aaron Schmautz, President of the Portland Police Association
