The African Film & Arts Foundation proudly presents the return of our first in-person Cinema for the Culture: Film Screenings + Masterclass series since 2020. Funding provided by Arts & Entertainment Atlanta and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District

About Cinema for the Culture (CFC): Film Screenings + Masterclass series

CFC is a signature event of the African Film and Arts Foundation inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) media arts organization based in Atlanta, Georgia with its mission to magnify and celebrate the visions, voices, lives and stories of people from Africa and the African Diaspora through the lens of film & the arts .

CFC is a community film screening and masterclass series that aims to change the narrative of stories by and about people of African descent. The series brings positive, educational, and relatable films to the big screen, followed by conversations with cast and crew of.

This event is free and open to the public! Registration is required! Space is limited, so reserve your spot today!


Join us for:

  • A screening of the award-winning film SIRA (2023) by Burkinabe filmmaker Apolline Traoré.
  • A moderated conversation with filmmaker(TBD). The discussion is expected to explore themes including the female protagonist in war, cultural interpretations, sexuality, and religion.

About Apolline Traoré
Event Photos

Apolline Traoré is an award-winning Burkinabé filmmaker and producer. After traveling the world due to her diplomat father's job, she studied at Emerson College in Boston. Traoré directed short films in the 2000s and released her first feature film in 2004. Back in Burkina Faso, she collaborated with Idrissa Ouédraogo and continued directing films and TV series. Her films, including "Moi Zaphira" and "Frontières", gained recognition at international film festivals like Fespaco.

Her most recent film, "Desrances," was screened at an online activation of Cinema for the Culture in 2020, followed by a Q&A session with the director herself and cast members including the lead actor Jimmy Jean-Louis. Visit here for clips.

Apolline Traoré is also known for her dedication to promoting culture and women's advancement in cinema and was installed in 2020 as the Ambassador of the National Museum of Burkina Faso.

SIRA won four awards at AMAA (African Movie Academy Awards) in 2023 including Best Sound & Best Director and won the Panorama Audience award at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival.
