The Thames Valley Group are delighted to have secured another visit to Cholsey & Wallingford Railway, which will include a tour/presentation by Dr Tony Stead, Ex Chairman.
**Note, tickets for the train will need to be purchased on the day.**
Starting with a talk and tour of the railway at 10:30, this will be followed by a return trip on the train down to Cholsey pulled by one of the Heritage 08 Diesel Locomotives at 11am. After this visitors are welcome to enjoy the surroundings visit the shop, the museum or even take a walk in the historic market town of Wallingford or walk down alongside the railway on the path towards Cholsey to the nearby St Mary's Church where Agatha Christie is buried.
Since the last presentation by Tony in early 2024 where the C&WR had not long received the famous Maidenhead canopy and the garden canopy a new canopy, which provides a sheltered area for picnics and coffees, there has been lots of exciting developments such as station redevelopment/revival, a refreshment kiosk and a new workshop.
Long term there are plans for a new station building with gift shop & café and perhaps even an engine shed.
Recent events include very popular Santa Express trains, Bunkfest trains, Real Ale trains, Fish & Chip trains and even a Magic on Wheels Train.
The railway won the Heritage Railway Association Theo Steel Memorial Award in 2021 for the Maidenhead Canopy
The Cholsey and Wallingford Railway is a 2+1⁄2-mile (4 km) long standard gauge heritage railway in the English county of Oxfordshire. It operates along most of the length of the former Wallingford branch of the Great Western Railway (GWR), from Cholsey station, 12 miles (19 km) north of Reading on the Great Western Main Line, to a station on the outskirts of the nearby town of Wallingford.
This heritage railway has big plans and you are sure of a friendly and enjoyable visit.
