Join us for our annual Churchyard Bioblitz at St Mary's Church, Abbotskerswell. This year we are leaving the survey open all week to tie in with the "Caring for God's Acre" initiative (more info here: https://www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk/churches-count-on-nature-faqs/). This means that you can turn up anytime between the 6th and 14th June and record any wildlife you spot in the churchyard using the method detailed below. We will also run a guided session on Saturday 13th June at 10am for those who might like to take part with other like-minded folk or for those who feel they need some guidance.
What is a Bioblitz?
A Bioblitz is a snapshot survey where we record as many different species as we can find - be it animal, plant or fungi.
What if I am not very good at identifying things?
Don't worry - we will use a simple app to photograph and record findings. Anyone can do it regardless of their level of knowledge or experience.
How can I prepare?
Please download the iNaturalist app in advance of coming along. Create a FREE account (skip any screens asking you for money!) Then you can simply turn up, take photos of any plants, fungi or animals you spot (you can even upload a record without a photo if you can't get a photo - of birds flying through for example). If you follow this process, your findings will automatically be added to our survey results - it really is that simple!
What else do I need to know?
Children are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Sensible footwear is recommended as the ground is uneven in places. Do bring a drink/snack if you feel you might need one.
Will the event go ahead if weather is poor?
Please keep an eye on this event page or the Abbwild group page on Facebook - if there are any changes to the event we will post there but we will do our best to proceed whatever the weather.
How long do I need to stay for?
As little or long as you like! Even if you simply walk through the churchyard on your way to school or to visit a friend, if you upload a record it will help!
Why do a Bioblitz?
By taking annual records, we can help the church team with their journey to become an "Eco Church". This information can also help the church team to target their interventions with the aim of supporting greater biodiversity in the churchyard. All records on iNaturalist can also be made available to other organisations in order to assist with data for other projects, so you'll be doing more than you realise to help nature when you take part.
